The tunnel structure, buried underground for over 20 years, will be revealed during the bulk excavation of Kwu Tung Station on the East Rail Line.
The bulk excavation has recently commenced at Kwu Tung Station on the East Rail Line, moving the project towards another milestone.
As part of the enabling works of the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line project, part of the tunnel structure works for Kwu Tung Station on the East Rail Line were completed and buried underground during construction of the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line. To carry out the station construction, the project team needs to use the "cut and cover" construction method and remove the layers of soil covering the tunnel structure gradually, before constructing the station's concourse, entrances / exits, ancillary facilities etc. Therefore, bulk excavation works are an indispensable procedure in the overall station construction.
Kwu Tung Station on the East Rail Line is the first new station in Hong Kong to be built atop operating railway tunnels. To carry out the excavation works while maintaining the daily operation of the East Rail Line, the project team must carry out various procedures and stringent monitoring as well as maintain close communication with the operations team.
