The MTR Corporation welcomes the Government's publication of the railway scheme for the Northern Link (NOL) Spur Line in the Gazette under the Railways Ordinance (Cap. 519). The Corporation will fully support and fulfil the pre-construction statutory procedures.
The Northern Link Spur Line Project is approximately 6.2 km long (with 5.1 km within Hong Kong). It will connect with the Northern Link Main Line at San Tin Station* and extend via Chau Tau Station* and The Loop Station* to Huanggang Port, becoming Hong Kong's third direct cross-boundary railway connection. The project will further deepen cross-boundary connectivity between Hong Kong and the Mainland. MTR Corporation is pushing the project in full swing with the detailed planning and design of the Northern Link Spur Line, as well as the Environmental Impact Assessment and other related studies.
MTR Corporation and the Government signed the Project Agreement for the Northern Link (Part 1) Project in July 2025, under which the Northern Link Main Line and Spur Line will be planned and developed as a single integrated project. The Corporation is committed to bringing both the Main Line and the Spur Line into service simultaneously on or before 2034. The railway scheme for the Main Line was gazetted in October 2023, and construction commenced in October 2025. Major construction works are progressing as planned, including the construction of the first tunnel boring machine (TBM) shaft and a substation that will provide power for future tunnel excavation works.
As for Kwu Tung Station* on the East Rail Line, under the Northern Link Project, the civil construction works have been substantially completed, with the station structure topped out in November last year. Station fitting-out works, as well as the installation of electrical and mechanical (E&M) and building services systems, are currently underway. The project is progressing towards its target opening next year, when it will serve the Kwu Tung North New Development Area.
MTR Corporation is progressing with a number of railway projects at full speed that support the development of the Northern Metropolis, with the Northern Link set to become the mass transportation backbone of the Northern Metropolis. Together, Kwu Tung Station* on the East Rail Line, the Northern Link Main Line and the Spur Line will form a new railway network serving the Northern Metropolis and providing a direct connection to Huanggang on the Mainland. The network will inject fresh momentum into the development of the Northern Metropolis and support Hong Kong's long-term overall growth and development.
